Infilco Degremont to Design, Supply and Install a Wastewater Treatment System to Upgrade an Existing FGD Treatment Unit at a Power Generating Station

Richmond, VA U.S.A. - GenOn Energy, formerly RRI Energy, has selected SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT affiliate Infilco Degremont, Inc. (IDI) and its sister company Anderson-Water Power & Technologies (A-WPT) to design, supply and install a wastewater treatment system to upgrade their existing wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) treatment unit at the Conemaugh Generating Station in Florence, PA.

The new innovative wastewater treatment system will be integrated into the existing wastewater treatment unit to provide additional removal capabilities of various contaminants from the wastewater, such as boron, selenium and manganese. The main design objective is to produce a treated effluent that will consistently meet the stringent effluent permit limits imposed on this generating station. IDI will be installing two patent-pending and state-of-the-art technologies developed by IDI for this FGD wastewater application. IDI’s ion exchange process for boron removal (iX™) was developed in collaboration with Dow Chemical and was extensively piloted at the Conemaugh Generating Station. IDI’s biological process for selenium removal (iBIO®) was selected for its robustness, superior technical capabilities and cost-effectiveness. “The upgraded wastewater treatment system will meet the stringent boron, selenium and manganese effluent permit limits of <100 mg/L, <0.25 mg/L and 1.6 mg/L, respectively,” states Rich Ubaldi, VP of Industrial Systems for Infilco. The treated wastewater will be discharged into the Conemaugh River.

GenOn Energy awarded a turnkey contract to Infilco Degremont based on their extensive database and broad track record with complex, performance-based FGD wastewater treatment systems. GenOn Energy Project Director, Mike Bradberry, affirmed that the IDI team was “customer focused, professional, and technically competent in every way”.

GenOn Energy’s upgraded wastewater treatment system is expected to go online in early 2012.
