Infilco Degremont’s Meteor® IFAS chosen for Proctor’s Creek WWTP

Richmond, VA, January 22, 2010 - Infilco Degremont, Inc. (SUEZ ENVIRONNEMENT) was recently awarded a major contract for the provision of their Meteor® IFAS process at the 30 MGD Proctor’s Creek wastewater treatment facility in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Infilco will provide all the equipment and technical support to Mid-Eastern Builders, the general contractors for the project.

Proctor’s Creek, like many facilities whose effluent finally flows into the Chesapeake Bay, is required to meet increasingly stringent effluent quality, particularly as it applies to nutrients. In this case, and that of its sister plant Falling Creek WWTF, the total nitrogen leaving the plants must be less than 5 mg/l.

Infilco will be using its biological Meteor process which utilizes floating biofilm carriers in association with conventional activated sludge so that the plant’s existing aeration basins can be modified to meet the new stringent conditions without the need for new construction. The design was developed following an on site pilot study that simulated the existing tank arrangement. The one-year study utilized a four stage process with a pre-anoxic zone, an aeration zone to achieve full nitrification, a post anoxic zone with an external carbon source and, finally, a re-aeration zone. Internal mixed liquor recycle sends nitrates back to the pre-anoxic zone for denitrification, with the post anoxic zone completing the final stage of denitrification. Over the course of a full year, system performance was monitored during every season, and the goal of meeting a final effluent total nitrogen level of less than 5 mg/l was successfully achieved.

As a result of this study, the existing basins will be modified with baffle walls so that treatment can be achieved entirely within the original structure. Based on the parameters developed during the study, the full scale facility was designed in association with the county’ s consultant, Malcolm Pirnie Inc., and is scheduled for completion in 2012.
